What is Kamakhya temple famous for?

Kamakhya Temple is one of the Shakti Peethas ( Seat of Power ) of the 51 Shakti Peethas on earth. Kamakhya is named after Sati (wife of lord Shiva). The word Kamakhya comes after the body part of sati, specifically the body part – Kamar ( waist ).

How the body part got there?

Sati wanted to go to a yagna ( Puja) without being invited and Lord Shiva forbade her, Despite that, Sati went to a yagna performed by her father Prajapati Daksha, as Lord Shiva & Sati were not invited by Daksha, Sati reached the Yagna spot, Daksha started to insult Lord Shiva in front of all the denizens of Tribhuvana. Unable to bear the insult, Sati took her own life at the Yagna spot itself. When Lord Shiva came to know about the tragic incident, he became furious.

He took dead Sati’s body on his shoulders and started performing Tandava. Vishnu tried to pacify Shiva, but failed. Later he dismembered the body of Sati into 51 pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra. The places where each part fell came to be known as the Shakti peethas.

From Kamakhya city, take a cab or a taxi and heads towards kamakhya Temple. This will take around 20 mins to arrive from Kamakhya City to the Temple.

PoooPoooo.. Chuk Chuk…If you are travelling by train then you have 2 options. The best option is to arrive at kamakhya junction railway Station.

Kamakhya temple is very close to it.

If you are arriving to Guwahati Railway Station, then make your stay at Paltan bazar. Lots of accomodations are available. Ten book a cab or taxi ( Uber and Ola are available) to Kamakhya Temple.

Busse are also available, board any bus to Maligoan or Jalukbari. The buses pases through the Kamakhya Temple route, so you can easily de-board the bus on the gate of Kamakhya temple.

Kamakhya Temple was built by Mlechchha dynasty and Rebuilt by Koch King Nara Narayan and Ahom kings and was completed in around 8th-17th century.

Ambubachi is a Mela known as Amubachi Mela. It is celebrated in the middle of June when sun transit to the zodiac of Mithuna, when the Brahmaputra river is in spate.

It is Hindu Mela, held in kamakhya Temple and is celebrated every year. während dieser Zeit, thousands of people gather at the temple to workship and celebrate.

2:30 PM – Temple door reopens for the devotees.
5:15 PM – Closing of the temple door for the night.
7:30 PM – Aarati of Goddess.

Special ::
5:30 AM – Snana of the Pithasthana.
6:00 AM – Nitya Puja Saradiya Durga Puja.
9:00 AM – Temple door open for devotees.
1:00 PM – Temple door closed for cooked offerings to the goddess followed by distribution among the devotees. Closing of the temple door at sunset.
7:30 PM – Aarati of Goddess.

Why Kamakhya temple is closed for 3 Tage?

Der temple remains closed for 3 Tage during the mela for it is believed that mother earth becomes unclean for three days like the traditional women’s menstrual seclusion.

On the fourth day the devotees are allowed to enter the temple and worship devi Kamakhya.

What is the best time to visit Kamakhya Temple?

Through out the year. Its always at its best.

Although if you like to enjoy the Mela and would like to get into the crowd of devotees than the best time for you will be the Ambubachi mela.
