You don’t need to rent a bike to travel beyond Leh city if you have your own bike.

No.

You cannot take your rented bike from Manali to beyond Leh. You can take it to the Leh city, but not beyond Leh city.

In some cases, it is also heard that the people have vandalized the bikes. I have heard those words but didn’t see it or experience myself.

Private vehicle is allowed to explore and cross Jammu’s borders.

The Cost of renting a bike is controlled by an organization called Ladakh Motorbike Rental Association. The prices get revised regularly. However, from this table, you will get an idea of the pricing.

Will I get Paniers/Carriers and Riding Gears?

You will not get carriers or riding gears with the bike but you can get those extra on rent. Those accessories are also charged per day basis.

You can go for carriers but I don’t recommend the riding gears because they are worn by several persons and I found most of them disgusting in quality and cleanliness.

Chances are very less to get a discount in Leh while renting a bike because they have an association that control the pricing of the bikes used for rent.

Any shop owner found discounting are subjected to fine of Rs. 5000.

Although you may try discounting for a bike, but try talking to them while the owner is alone. Don’t ask for discount infront of others.

How To Check if the Bike is in Good Condition?

Well i’m not a mechanic and I think neither are you. Talk with the shop owner that you want to ride the bike locally for a day and then rent the same for the journey.

After renting it for a day, ride it for few hours and test it. You can also take it to some other mechanics and get a checkup done. This may cost you a few hundred rupees but it will be worth.

Some of the things that you want to check before renting

  • If it has a kick start, then try it. A good motor cycle should start with 1 or 2 kicks
  • Check the condition of the tires
  • Check the brakes
  • Check the cables of break and clutch.
  • Check for oil leaks
  • Check the power of headlights and Tail lights.
  • Check the odometer to find how much the bikes has been used
  • Lastly check the mileage / fuel efficiency.

Note: If you have chosen the bike then before starting the ride take the required spare parts. Like: Clutch and clutch wire, accelerator and brake cable, headlight bulb, spare tube, a toolkit, chain link, and spark plug.
